Consumers are becoming more and more interested in exotic flavours, tastes and cuisines, and as a result, supermarkets are importing products from all around the world to satisfy this demand. Furthermore, the costs of production and transportation have decreased significantly in recent years, making it more profitable for supermarkets to import products from different countries.
Another reason for this trend is the increasing availability of information about different foods. The internet has made it easy for people to access information about the various types of food available in different countries, and this has further increased the demand for variety.
On balance, this is a positive development. Whilst there are some drawbacks, such as the environmental impact of importing food products from other countries, the overall benefits of this trend outweigh the disadvantages. For instance, it has made a wider variety of food available to consumers, and this has allowed people to experience different cultures and cuisines. Furthermore, it has helped to create more jobs in the food industry, as supermarkets have to employ more staff to manage the imports.
