Crime is a major issue in modern societies, and it is worrying that recent research suggests that many criminals who are released from prison often commit more crimes after their release. This essay aims to discuss the reasons why this is the case and suggest possible solutions.
Reoffending rates are higher for prisoners who have been released from prison than those who have not been incarcerated. This could be explained by the fact that prisons are not necessarily providing the necessary support to help former inmates reintegrate into society. It is likely that many prisoners have limited life skills, such as finding work or managing finances, and thus cannot function properly in society without outside help. Furthermore, prisons can have a negative effect on inmates’ mental health, as the environment can be hostile and lack adequate resources. It is therefore not surprising that former inmates may struggle to cope with life on the outside and resort to criminal behaviour.
In order to reduce reoffending rates, it is essential that former inmates are given the necessary support when they are released. This could include providing education and career guidance, as well as psychological therapy and social integration programmes. Furthermore, prisons should offer more rehabilitation programmes that are tailored to the individual needs of inmates. This could include providing educational courses, vocational training and substance abuse counselling. Providing inmates with these skills and support could help them to adjust to life on the outside and reduce their chances of reoffending.
In conclusion, it is evident that high rates of reoffending suggest that prisons are not providing the necessary support and guidance to former inmates. It is therefore essential that prisons provide more tailored rehabilitation programmes to help former inmates adjust to life outside prison, as well as providing education and career guidance. Only by doing this can we hope to reduce reoffending rates and make our societies safer.
