It is commonly argued that governments should provide financial support to creative artists such as painters and musicians. However, there are those who believe that they should be funded by alternative sources. This essay will discuss both views and will conclude with my opinion.
The most obvious argument in favour of governments funding creative artists is that it would be beneficial to society. These individuals often produce works of art that are enjoyed by the public, and it is argued that a government subsidy would enable more of these works to be produced. Furthermore, such subsidies could help to protect traditional art forms, and even encourage the development of new ones. For example, in the United Kingdom, the Arts Council provides funding for various musical and theatrical performances that would otherwise not take place.
On the other hand, there are those who believe that alternative sources should provide funding for artists. In this case, the argument is that the government should be spending its money on other priorities such as health and education. It could also be argued that the free market should be allowed to determine which art forms are successful. Furthermore, it could be argued that the government should not be in the business of deciding which artists are worthy of subsidies, as this could become a form of censorship.
In my opinion, I believe that governments should provide some form of financial support to creative artists. However, this support should not be too generous, as it could lead to a situation where the government is effectively deciding which art forms are successful. Instead, the subsidy should be modest, and should be used to support those art forms that have the potential to be enjoyed by the public. Furthermore, I believe that the government should also encourage alternative sources of funding, such as private donations and corporate sponsorship.
In conclusion, while there are arguments both for and against government funding of creative artists, I believe that a modest subsidy should be provided, while alternative sources of funding should also be encouraged.
