It is commonly argued that prison is the most effective way of dealing with criminal behaviour, yet some people are of the opinion that education should be prioritised instead. I believe that education should not be seen as an alternative to prison, but that it should be used to complement existing forms of punishment in order to reduce the rate of re-offending.
In many cases, prison is necessary in order to protect society from dangerous criminals. Furthermore, it is a form of punishment that serves as a deterrent for potential offenders. As such, it is an essential part of the criminal justice system. However, prison sentences can be expensive and ineffective in reducing re-offending rates. It is in these cases that education can be used to complement existing forms of punishment.
Through education, offenders can learn valuable skills which can help them to find work and become productive members of society. For example, offenders can learn about the consequences of their actions and the importance of following the law. They can also develop skills in problem solving, communication and financial management, which can help them to avoid criminal behaviour in the future. Furthermore, by providing offenders with education, it can help to reduce the stigma attached to criminal behaviour, enabling them to become more socially accepted.
Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge that education is not a panacea for criminal behaviour. In some cases, prison is necessary in order to protect society, and education should not be used as an alternative to imprisonment.
