Sample Answer:

It is argued by some that students should be taught academic subjects only so that they can pass their exams, and practical skills such as cooking should not be taught. I disagree with this view as I believe that both types of skills are important for a student’s development.

To begin, it is true that academic subjects are important in helping students to pass exams and gain qualifications. In today’s competitive job market, having a good education and qualifications is essential for success. Employers want to employ those with good qualifications, so without them students will struggle to find employment. Therefore, academic subjects should certainly be taught in schools.

However, I disagree that practical skills such as cooking should not be taught. These are essential life skills which students need to learn in order to lead independent and successful lives. Cooking is a basic skill which everybody should know, and it is especially important for those who may not be able to afford ready-made meals. Learning how to cook healthy and nutritious meals from basic ingredients is a skill which can help people to lead healthier and more cost effective lifestyles.

It is important to remember that academic subjects alone cannot prepare students for the world of work. In addition to having good qualifications, employers look for those with a range of practical skills and life experience. A person who can cook and manage their own money will be more attractive to employers than one who has just studied for exams.

In conclusion, I believe that both academic subjects and practical skills should be taught in schools. Whilst good qualifications are necessary for success, it is also important that students gain a range of life skills which will help them to manage their lives as adults.
