Sample Answer:

Nowadays, there is an ongoing debate on whether students in high or secondary school should be able to choose their courses freely or if certain courses, such as mathematics, should be compulsory. This essay will discuss both views before concluding with a personal opinion.

On the one hand, it is argued that students should be allowed to freely choose courses in order to concentrate on their personal interests and hobbies. This way, they can choose courses that are more enjoyable and it will allow them to explore their potential in different areas. For instance, a student may be really good in art and painting and it would be beneficial for them to take more art classes which would help them progress in that area. In addition, allowing students to select their own courses can increase their motivation and engagement, as they will be able to learn something that they are passionate about.

On the other hand, it is argued that certain courses, such as mathematics, should be compulsory for all students. Mathematics is considered to be the foundation of modern education and it provides students with the skills to think logically, analytically and solve problems. Moreover, mathematics is used in almost all disciplines, including science, technology and engineering, so it is important for students to have a solid understanding of it. Furthermore, mathematics can help students develop their problem-solving skills, which can be beneficial in their future careers.

In my opinion, I believe that while students should be given the opportunity to choose some of their courses, certain courses, such as mathematics, should be compulsory. This way, students can still focus on their personal interests and hobbies, while also gaining the knowledge and skills necessary for their future. In addition, if mathematics is made compulsory, then schools can provide more resources and support for students who may struggle with the subject.
