Sample Answer:

Nowadays, hosting huge international sporting events such as the World Cup is a controversial issue. On the one hand, there are people who think that it is a wasteful expenditure for the host nation, while on the other hand, a group of people believe that these events bring positive impacts to the host country. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument before giving my opinion.

Advocates of the opinion that hosting large sporting events is a waste of money contend that it causes an excessive financial burden on the host nation. They argue that the cost of constructing stadiums and other infrastructure, as well as the money spent on accommodation and security, could be used for more productive purposes such as providing education, healthcare and other basic public services. Additionally, they believe that the money paid to host the event should be diverted to other sectors and investments that would generate more economic benefits for the country.

On the contrary, supporters of the opinion that hosting large sporting events has a clear, positive impact on a country suggest that such events bring in money from tourists, international media and sponsors that can boost the host nation’s economy. Also, these events increase the global visibility of the host nation, thus promoting its culture and values, as well as allowing it to showcase its attractions to the world.

In my opinion, nations should be cautious when deciding to host large sporting events. The decision should be based on a cost-benefit analysis to determine whether the expected financial gains outweigh the costs. Hosting such events should be considered only when the nation has the capacity to host such events in a way that maximizes the potential benefits while minimizing the risks. For instance, if the host nation has a strong tourism industry, then hosting the event could be a great way of bringing in more tourists and money. On the other hand, if the host nation does not have the infrastructure to support such events, then it should be avoided.
