Some feel that cities should be designed to be beautiful while others feel their functionality is more important
Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.
The design of cities has been a source of contention since the industrial revolution, with some favouring a focus on aesthetic beauty while others argue that functionality should be the priority. This essay will discuss both sides of this debate and argue that a combination of both should be sought.
On the one hand, when designing a city, it is important to consider aesthetic beauty. This is because cities act as a representation of a country, and the way in which they appear can reflect the culture and values of that nation. Additionally, the beauty of a city can be a source of pride and admiration, leading to increased tourism and revenue, as well as a higher quality of life for the citizens. A notable example of this is the city of Paris, which has become renowned for its stunning architecture and world-famous monuments.
On the other hand, it is also essential to consider the functionality of cities. This is because if a city is not designed with efficiency in mind, it can lead to overcrowding, traffic, and an increase in pollution. In addition, it can be difficult for city-dwellers to access the amenities and services that they need if the city is not laid out logically and in a way that suits the needs of its citizens. An example of this is the city of Tokyo, Japan, which is well-known for its efficient public transport systems and infrastructure.
In my opinion, both aspects should be taken into consideration when designing a city. This is because both beauty and functionality are important in order to create a city that is both visually pleasing and provides a good quality of life for its citizens. Furthermore, if a city is designed with both aesthetics and functionality in mind, it can lead to increased investment, as well as improved tourism and revenue. An example of this is the city of Dubai, which is renowned for its striking skyline and modern infrastructure.
In conclusion, although beauty and functionality are both important when designing a city, both should be considered in order to create a city that is both visually appealing and efficient. If a city is designed with both of these aspects in mind, it can lead to increased investment and improved quality of life for its citizens.
