IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: Sample Answer
The provided illustration gives data about the smoking habits of UK people dividing them in six different age groups. As is presented, people from 25 to 54 years smoke more than other age groups and more ex-smokers could be found in old age groups.
According to the presented data, among 16-24 years UK population, about 60% never smoked while only about 8% are ex-smokers. Light smokers’ percentage in this age group is about 25% while 4% are heavy smokers.
In the 25-34 age group, the light smokers’ percentage increases to about 30% while there are approximately 10% heavy smokers in this age group. Only about 5% are ex-smokers while about 55% of this people never smoked.
A similar pattern of smokers and non-smokers could be observed for the 35 -44 and 45-54 age groups. These two age groups have the largest percentage of heavy smokers (about 20%) while ex-smokers’ number increased in the later age group with about 10%.
With the increase of age, the ex-smokers number increases in for the people over 64 years old there could be found more than 40% ex-smokers. On the contrary, the light smokers could be found more among the young age groups.
