Sample Answer:

The architectural style of a local area is often a source of pride for the residents, and there is no doubt that the design of a neighbourhood can have a significant impact on the lives of those living there. There is considerable debate surrounding whether new houses built in a local area should conform to traditional designs, or if people should be allowed to build in whatever style they desire.

On the one hand, there are those who believe that newly built homes should be in keeping with the traditional style of the area. This is often seen as preserving the aesthetic and the historical integrity of the neighbourhood. Furthermore, it can help to give a sense of identity to those living there, and promote a sense of community. This is particularly pertinent in older districts where the streets are lined with period properties and the arrival of a modern house could prove jarring.

On the other hand, there are those who feel that people should have the freedom to build homes in whatever style they choose. This could be beneficial for the local economy as it would encourage people to buy land and build in the area, and could also bring fresh ideas and styles to the neighbourhood. Furthermore, it could provide an opportunity for people to express themselves and create something unique.

In my opinion, there should be a balance between the two views. Local authorities should ensure that any new houses built are consistent with the overall style of the area, in order to maintain its character. However, this should be balanced with some flexibility to allow people to express themselves and create something new. This could be achieved in various ways, such as allowing people to use modern building materials to build in a traditional style, or to use traditional materials in a modern design. By striking this balance, local areas can benefit from the best of both worlds.
