In common parlance, culture is the total pattern of human behavior and its products represent in language, action, and artifacts and subject to man’s capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge and wisdom to descendants. However, now it seems like that there is one single world culture. This is because the advent of high tech introduces an unprecedented change in communication, economy, and politics.
It goes without saying that technology has unveiled a new horizon of communication. The explosive development of communication, which is the consequence of high tech, are shrinking the world into a global village. That is to say, people can communicate instantly from anywhere with their friends, family members, and colleagues, no matter how far they are. Let me clarify a bit more. People can now works from their convenient place instead of conventional office with the help of technology. Yes, telecommuting is the recent popular concept and it is infusing technologically superior western culture into the rest of the world. When the employee teleconferences through Skype with is boss, certainly the employee will be culturally influenced to a great extent.
Likewise, technology has brought a massive change in trade and commerce. With the help of sophisticated technology, western civilization produces an endless array of goods and services and expands its market across the globe. Take American culture as an example. American citizens think themselves as apostles of fast world, the priests of high tech and the prophets of free market. Americans want enlargement of both their Pizza Huts and values. And the reality echoes their aspirations. The rest of the world follow their lead, and become democratic and capitalist, with a Coca-Cola on every lip, a Web site in every pot, Hollywood films on every screen, and Microsoft Windows in every computer. In this way, American culture is penetrating into everywhere. They are making it possible due to their technological supremacy.
Similarly, technology is magically contributing to the closer contacts among the nations and this is thriving the globalization, the most complicated phenomenon in the contemporary world. Globalization has been developing by leaps and bounds with the help of technology for the last two decades. Globalization backed by high tech has a tremendous impact on polity, society, culture, and way of life. In fact, globalization is a hegemonic concept that is creating a global cultural village of western civilization.
In fine, technology has created a tremendous influence on local cultures. The Internet, e-commerce, cable TV, the super information highway, and modern transportation is sweeping away cultural boundaries and is fostering the culture of western civilization.
