Many manufactured food and drink products contain high levels of sugar, which causes many health problems. Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar

Sample Answer:

It is widely accepted that consumption of sugary food and drinks has a detrimental effect on people’s health. As a result, some argue that prices should be increased to reduce the demand for these unhealthy products. I disagree with this position for the following reasons.

Firstly, it is true that the excessive consumption of sugar can lead to a range of health problems from obesity to diabetes. However, making sugary products more expensive would only affect people’s wallets, not their eating habits. It is a fact that humans are creatures of habit and if they have acquired a taste for sugary food, they will be willing to pay the extra cost in order to maintain their current diet.

Secondly, profit-seeking businesses will not stop producing sugary food and drinks solely in order to promote healthier dietary choices. The reason for this is that sugary food and drinks are very popular products, and therefore, they are very profitable. Companies will not be willing to sacrifice their profits by increasing the prices of their products.

Thirdly, although making sugary food more expensive would certainly reduce the demand for such products, it would be unfair to those people who cannot afford to purchase healthier alternatives. It is true that healthier food can be more expensive, but for those on a low income, the price difference may be too much and they will be forced to purchase sugary products regardless of the cost.

In conclusion, although sugary products can be unhealthy, making them more expensive will not be effective in promoting healthier dietary choices. Other measures such as education and subsidies for healthier food should be used instead.
