Many people today are debating the pros and cons of the increasing number of large supermarkets and the decline of small shops. This essay will discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of this trend, and ultimately argue that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
On the one hand, it could be argued that the construction of large supermarkets is beneficial to society. Firstly, they are able to provide a wide variety of products and services to customers, which can be especially useful in rural areas where there may be limited access to smaller shops. Secondly, the large supermarkets create employment opportunities, which can help to reduce the levels of poverty and unemployment in the local area. Finally, larger supermarkets can often offer cheaper prices than smaller shops, which helps to make essential goods more affordable for consumers.
On the other hand, there are also several disadvantages of this trend. Firstly, the closure of small shops can have a negative effect on local communities. Many local shops are owned and operated by local people, and the closure of these stores can lead to a loss of local character and charm. Furthermore, when small shops close, local people may be forced to travel further to access essential goods and services, which can be especially problematic for elderly people who are unable to travel as easily.
