It is impossible to help all people around the world in need so governments should focus on people from their own country
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is true that there is an infinite number of people all over the world who require assistance and, consequently, governments are faced with a difficult decision. On the one hand, there is an ethical responsibility to help those who are in need, regardless of their location. On the other hand, it is also important to consider the resources available and the costs of providing aid. As a result, this essay will argue that governments should focus primarily on assisting their own citizens rather than those from abroad.
There is a strong argument to be made that governments have a duty to look after their own citizens first. This is because their primary responsibility is to protect and provide for those within their own borders. For example, governments are expected to provide basic services such as health care, education and welfare benefits, which should be available to all citizens. If a government were to divert resources to help people in other countries, it could mean that their own citizens would suffer as a result of insufficient funds. Therefore, it is more important for a government to ensure that its own citizens are well provided for before offering aid to those abroad.
Furthermore, it is also important to consider the practical implications of providing assistance to those in other countries. The cost of providing aid to those abroad can be extremely high, and may even be unsustainable in the long-term. This could mean that a government is unable to provide the necessary resources for its own citizens, leading to an increase in poverty and inequality. As such, it is better for a government to focus on providing aid for its own citizens, as this will allow them to ensure that the most vulnerable in society are given the support they need.
In conclusion, while there is a moral obligation to help those in need from all over the world, it is more important for governments to focus on providing aid for their own citizens first. This is because their primary responsibility is to protect and provide for their own citizens, and diverting funds to other countries could mean that those within their borders are unable to access basic services. Furthermore, providing assistance to those abroad can also be financially costly, and may not be sustainable in the long-term. Therefore, it is better for a government to focus on providing aid for its own citizens, as this will ensure that the most vulnerable in society are given the support they require.
