To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sample Answer:
Today, there is a tendency for women to major in the humanities while men more often pursue scientific studies, a pattern that some believe should be changed. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with this tendency, and changing it would be counter-productive.
In the first place, it is important to recognize that the choice of what to study is a personal one. If a woman has a strong interest in the humanities, or a man in science, then it is only natural that they should follow those interests. To attempt to change this tendency would be to deny individuals their right to make choices about their own education. Furthermore, the current situation is a reflection of the fact that people have different interests, and this should be celebrated rather than suppressed.
In addition, it is arguable that the current pattern of study has its own advantages. For example, it means that the humanities are not neglected, despite the fact they may not be as financially remunerative as some scientific studies. This benefits society as a whole, as the humanities bring a richness to our culture that would be lost if everyone focused solely on scientific pursuits.
On the other hand, it could be argued that it is unfair for men to be denied the opportunity to study the humanities. However, this is not the case, since men are able to pursue a humanities degree if they wish. Furthermore, there is no shortage of men studying the humanities, as many universities have a gender balance in the humanities. Therefore, the issue is not so much one of access, but of choice.
In conclusion, while I understand the arguments in favour of changing the current tendency of women studying the humanities and men studying science, I believe that this pattern should be accepted. It is a reflection of the fact that people have different interests, and this should be respected rather than suppressed.
