Energy use in Australia

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: Sample Answer

The pie chats illustrate the energy consumption by different equipment in Australia houses and the proportion of greenhouse gas emitted by them.

Overall, the heating is responsible for the largest proportion of the energy used by Australian household. However, it is not the major emitter of greenhouse gas, being the water heating the greatest responsible for the emission. On the other hand, the cooling system uses only the tiniest amount of energy but in contrast emits the least amount of the gas that causes greenhouse effect.

In terms of energy use by Australian household, the heating is responsible for the large majority (42%), followed by water heating (nearly one third) and other appliances. The others are responsible for an insignificant minority: refrigeration (7%), lighting (14%), and cooling (2%).

In regards to the emission of greenhouse gas, the water heating is responsible for nearly one third. Heating and refrigerator emit almost the same amount, 14% and 15% respectively. The emission by other appliances is 28% while cooling and lighting account together for only a small minority (11%).
