IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: Sample Answer

The given illustration presents information about the expenditure per person per day on three different meats in Britain in 1985. The expenditure is categorized based on people’s income status – high, middle and low income.

As is observed from the graph, beef was the most popular meat type among the high and middle income class while pork was most preferred by the low income group population in the UK. The high income group population spent about 65 pence per person in a day on beef. Their expenditure for chicken (about 17 pence) was higher than the pork (about 12 pence). On the other hand, middle income class people spent about 35 pence for beef which was higher than their spending on pork (around 22 pence) and chicken (11 pence). Finally the people with low income spent more on pork than they did for beef and chicken. Their spending per person in a day for beef was about 19 pence while it was more than 34 pence for pork and about 15 pence for chicken.
