To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sample Answer:
In recent years, there has been an increasing trend of governments investing in works of art such as paintings and statues in cities to improve the quality of people’s lives. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this approach and ultimately conclude that, while the government should devote more money to this, other options should also be considered.
On the one hand, art can bring beauty, culture and life to a city. It can encourage people to take pride in their city, and attract tourists and businesses. For example, the Eiffel Tower in Paris has become an iconic symbol of the city, and has greatly contributed to its economy. Moreover, art can also be used to address social issues. For example, the statues of Nelson Mandela in South Africa have become a powerful symbol of freedom and unity, and have inspired many people to fight for a better future.
On the other hand, there are some disadvantages to investing in art. Firstly, it can be costly, and may detract resources from more pressing issues such as housing, health and education. Additionally, it can be difficult to decide which works of art should be funded. While some may consider a particular work of art to be beautiful, others may find it offensive or distasteful. This could lead to conflict and disagreement in the community.
In conclusion, while investing in works of art can bring beauty and life to a city, the government should also consider other options. They may want to consider funding more practical projects such as housing, health and education, or encouraging private individuals and businesses to fund art projects. This way, the government can make sure that resources are used wisely and for the benefit of all.
