Developing the economy will always damage the environment
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sample Answer:
Nowadays, economic growth is often associated with environmental degradation and it is commonly assumed that the two are inseparable. This essay will argue that while economic development has the potential to damage the environment, it is not necessarily the case and there are measures which can be taken to ensure that the two are compatible.
It is true that economic growth often leads to environmental degradation. The burning of fossil fuels, for example, is necessary for the production of energy, but it releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, leading to global warming. Furthermore, the development of industry and infrastructure can lead to deforestation and the destruction of habitats.
On the other hand, it is possible for economic growth and environmental protection to go hand in hand. For example, governments can introduce taxes on carbon emissions and other forms of pollution, incentivising companies to reduce their environmental impact. Technology can also be used to make production processes more efficient, thus reducing emissions. In addition, governments can invest in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, which have far less of an impact on the environment than traditional sources of energy.
Finally, the public can play an important role in protecting the environment. Through increased awareness and education, people can be encouraged to adopt environmentally-friendly lifestyles, such as reducing their consumption of products with a high environmental cost and recycling more.
In conclusion, it is true that economic growth has the potential to damage the environment, but it is not necessarily the case. With the right policies and public engagement, it is possible to ensure that economic growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand.
