Dance is the manifestation of the movement of soul. From ancient age, it has been expressing emotions, telling stories, and creating social ties. Actually, dance is one of the cornerstones of a culture. It plays a paramount role in every culture throughout the globe.

Dance is an indispensable part of culture playing a vital role in every aspect of life from religion to celebration of nature. Take Manipuri dance as an example. Manipuri dance comes from Manipur, a small state tucked in the north eastern corner of India surrounded by hills. The isolation of the land leads to the carving of a distinct and unique cultural identity of the Manipuris and for centuries the people have conserved and foster their rich culture of dance and music. The most important aspect of Manipuri culture is that it has preserved the ancient ritual based dances. One of these categories is “Ras Leela”.

Again, culture is the signature of a community, nation or territory and it could be reflected through culture. That is to say, the most important role of a culture is to distinguish a community from rest of the world. And in the case, dance is the most useful tool of culture; for example, the Dragon Dance and the Lion Dance. If anyone watches these dances, he certainly can recognize the rich culture of Chinese; because, the dragon embodies the wisdom, power, and wealth. In every Chinese New Year’s Day, the dance is performed to scare away the evil spirits and bad luck. The folk dance, thus, is the manifestation of Chinese culture distinguishing from other cultures of the world.

To wrap up, culture is the identity of a nation and dance is the representation of the culture. The way a dance is performed, the costume is used is varied from cultures to cultures and the dance makes the culture unique. Therefore, dance is the mirror of a culture.
