To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sample Answer:
It is widely believed that as technology advances, crime rates will decrease as it becomes easier to detect and prevent criminal acts. On the one hand, it is true that modern technology has enabled the development of sophisticated surveillance systems and crime-detection tools, which can be extremely effective in preventing crime. On the other hand, I believe there are other factors that are equally important in the fight against crime.
To begin with, it is undeniable that modern technology has vastly improved the ability of law enforcement to detect and prevent crime. For example, the implementation of CCTV cameras in public places has been shown to reduce crime rates in cities around the world. CCTV footage can provide evidence for criminal prosecutions, and it can also act as a deterrent by making potential criminals aware that they are being monitored. Furthermore, advances in biometric technology, such as facial recognition and fingerprint scanners, have enabled more accurate identification of offenders.
However, I believe that other factors are just as important in bringing about a reduction in crime rates. For example, education and poverty reduction are both crucial in preventing people from turning to crime as a means of survival. People who are educated and have access to decent employment opportunities are less likely to commit criminal acts than those who lack these basic rights. Furthermore, when governments invest in poverty reduction programmes, crime rates tend to decline as people have access to basic necessities and no longer feel the need to resort to criminal activity.
In conclusion, while there is no doubt that advances in technology have enabled the development of sophisticated tools for detecting and preventing criminal activity, I believe that other factors are just as important in reducing crime rates. Education, poverty reduction and other social policies can be just as effective in decreasing the incidence of crime.
