Model Answer:
“Neither a borrower nor a lender to be”. The famous dialogue is uttered by Polonius, the chief counselor to King Claudius in Hamlet. As Polonius gives some fatherly advice to his son Laertes, Shakespeare passes us to a timeless advice that “Do not lend money to friends”. In the response of the question that why we should not lend money to friends and family, he replies that “For loan oft loses both itself and friend”. However I completely agree with the notion that borrowing money from a friend can ruin friendship.
To start with, it is very often difficult to ask for the money back. When a friend lends money to a friend, he cares about the borrower friend and do not want the friend to feel awkward. But no one knows the future. If the lender friend does not back his money in his difficult time, he may break the relationship. My experience is worth to mention here. A friend of mine borrowed some money from another friend. The lender friend did not ask money from the borrower friend. One day the lender friend needed the money so urgently that borrower friend failed to back money unfortunately. The friendship has broken and even they do not talk to each other till now.
Similarly, people could lose their money and relationship as well. As Shakespeare advises that “For loan oft loses both itself and friend. There are a pile of examples that often money can cause the break of friendship. For instance, if a person borrows money from his friend and tries to avoid any contacts with the lender friend, then the lender friend eventually disappointed with the attitude of his friend and may end their relationship. Thus the borrowing money can jeopardize the friendship.
In conclusion, I would like to say a friend can ask help from another friend in need. This is quite normal, think. If you can afford the loan money to a friend, you should have an honest and open conversation to discuss the potential problems with the loan. Most cases, issues related to these kinds of personal loans can be solved with an open and frank discussion.
